Daily Prayer for December 19, 2023: Psalm 124

Prayer: Our God, we give you thanks because you are our shield and protector, a present help in times of trouble. We live in difficult days, though it is no surprise because your Son told us that we will face opposition of every kind. Indeed, all those who desire to live a godly life will be persecuted. We know, our God, that our help comes from you. We know you are for us, having chosen us out of the world. If not for you, we would be hopelessly lost, destroyed by the efforts of evil people and the Evil One. Yet, Father, there are times when we face opposition, which troubles us greatly. When we face opposition from those who name the name of Christ and when those same people cause us to stumble and fall, we grieve more because these things should not happen within your church. Yet, there are evil people in the visible church. They profess faith but live contrary to the faith once delivered to the saints. Eventually, you expose them and ultimately bring to light their evil deeds for all to see. In that, you protect your church, and we are grateful. Still, Father, it is painful and hard to endure. Opposition from the world is one thing, but when it comes from those we sit with each Lord’s Day, who call us friends and then betray everything they have said by their actions, we are often left bewildered. In this, you are still our faithful God. These things remind us that our help is in the Name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. In these times, we are reminded that our trust must always be in you. Please grant us the perseverance we need today. Please grant us the help you gave our fathers in the days of the flood, the Exodus, and the wandering in the wilderness. Please remember us for good, O Lord! We pray these things in the name of our Savior, who was also betrayed. Amen.
