Prayer: Our gracious God in heaven, you have given us your Word to be read, but especially preached. You have ordained the preaching of your Word and the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ as that which saves your people from their sin and perseveres them to the end of their days. Indeed, the Word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. Through preaching, you lift up the hurting and struggling, rebuke the wandering and hard-hearted, convict the unrepentant sinner, and rescue the souls of those your Son determines to save. Therefore, holy Father, may you use your Word today as it is proclaimed by those prepared for the task and approved to that labor. May you use it for the good of your glory as they preach Christ crucified. May you use it to turn back the wanderer from the misery of their own foolishness and folly. May you use it to shame the arrogance of those who, professing to be wise, are fools. Be pleased, our God, to speak loudly, clearly, and plainly to the hearts of the people you love. Please grant to us on this, another Lord’s Day, the reminder of your favor for your redeemed people, the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. These things we pray, Lord, humbly and boldly due to the work of your Son, our Lord, and Savior. Amen.
