8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:8-10)
Prayer: Our Father, so often we come to you and confess our sins because we have a conscience that is plagued by our transgressions and consequences. Rarely do we come to you and confess those sins because we have offended you. Too often, our Father, we view sin lightly and without regard for the offense it is against your holy Name. Too frequently, we merely offer a general confession of sin without naming it, agreeing with you about it, and determining with the help of your Spirit to turn away from it. WE know your Word makes it clear that all sin is a heinous act against your holy nature and name. Please forgive our casual view of sin. Please give us a great sense of the ugliness of our sin and help us to lament, mourn, and repent of it truly. Please help us to watch and pray so we don’t fall into temptation and sin against you. Please continue your work of grace in us as you conform us into the nature of the Righteous One, the Lord Jesus Christ, in whose Name we pray. Amen.
