Prayer: Grant to us, our most holy and loving God a sense of your presence and care as we pilgrim through a dark and hostile place. We plead with you to raise your voice to defend your covenant people as we endure the onslaught of wicked people. Many have used their tongues to harm your children. Many have demonstrated their hypocrisy by using their tongue for evil while, at the same time, they bless and praise your name. Sadly, we see these people sitting with us in the pews week after week. They encircle us, using their lying tongues, exercising the evil in their hearts, to destroy your elect. Though we do nothing but love them, they return that love with hate, rewarding our good with evil. We know that your beloved Son experienced these things from those he loved. Indeed, he was subjected to the vile words and evil actions of the one who betrayed him into the hands of evil people. We know that your Son did nothing but love those he met, but they still crucified him with their words and actions. We pray, our Father, that you will deal well on behalf of your people for your name’s sake and ours. Though we are poor and needy, helpless and hurting, we know your love for us will never end. Therefore, we ask and plead that you will deliver us from the lying tongues of those closest to us and bring to them the due consequence of their sin. Forgive us, Father, for the times when we are like them. Please give us pure hearts and clean words that we may our lips for the purpose we have them: to praise and honor your great name. These things we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
