Prayer: Grant almighty God that you would move your people to guard the words of their mouths carefully so that we would not sin against you with our words. Father, we pray that you would cause us to guard our mouths and keep a close watch over the door of our lips so that our words would not be used for evil but good. We further ask that you purify our hearts because we know that the things we say reflect our hearts’ state. Holy Father, indeed we see that we sin in many ways, and the warnings of your Word regarding the use of our tongue are clear and pointed. We confess our failures in this area. We acknowledge that we have engaged in gossip and slander. We confess that we have talked too much and listened too little. We confess our self-centeredness and are ashamed of how easy it is for us to use our words for destruction instead of for edification and encouragement. Grant, we pray thee, a greater willingness to be quick to hear and slow to speak. Grant, we beseech thee a clean heart that speaks truth in love. Grant, we ask of thee a better understanding of your mind and will in this area so that we would not sin against you.

We pray this day for those who are called to speak your Word as they preach it each Lord’s Day. We ask that you purify their hearts and minds with the very Word you have given to all of us and, through it, use them to speak boldly and pastorally the mind of the Spirit as they labor before your people. Grant them an extra measure of your Spirit, we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.
