Prayer: Our God and Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as in heaven. As we come to you to pray and plead for the sake of others and ourselves, we come knowing that we are idol factories, often devising and creating things in our lives that supplant your rightful rule over us. Like the church of old, we, too, form golden calves in our lives. We have quickly turned aside to things that are deaf and dumb, unable to speak and act. We place too much hope in material possessions, people, and positions. The sin of idolatry is painted across our lives, and it is a sad picture of our weak and miserable condition. Sadly, we fail to worship you publicly and privately, as you have told us. We fail to trust you as we should, placing our confidence in princes and other people. In these things, we are ashamed and mourn because we look and see the sorry state that sin has brought to us. In these things, Father, we are reminded why we need a Savior. He alone has honored you as you command. He alone has kept his mind free from idolatry. He alone can atone for our many transgressions and sins, and we confess them now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
We pray this day that you would purify your church of those things that distract her from seeking first your kingdom and righteousness. We pray that you would “stir up our nest,” causing us to depend solely on you for our daily bread. We know that you love your church and are working to conform her to the image of your Son. Therefore, we pray that you would do that through your Word, which is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. Finally, we pray that you would bring great fruit from the preaching of your Word and use it to cause your people to have no other gods before them. These things we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
