Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 17
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q5
Q.5. Are there more Gods than one?
A. There is but one only, the living and true God.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, you alone are glorious and majestic. All praise of men and angels are to be offered to you, the one true God of heaven and earth. We thank you for revealing yourself in the works of creation and through your Word. We know that you speak from the heavens each day with an unheard voice. We behold your glory every morning as the sun rises, and a new day begins. We praise you for your gift of the Scriptures, which explains your works in the world that you made.

We confess to you, our God, that while your Word teaches that there is only one true and living God that we often sin by erecting other gods in our life. We confess to you the god of entertainment, money, relationship, and things. We are ashamed at how prone we are to creating an idol out of every good and perfect gift that you grant to us. Forgive us, Lord, and help us to fix our eyes on the beauty and majesty of the one true and living God of all creation.

Help us, Father, as our God and sustainer, to walk in humility before you. Grant to us a willing spirit, boasting only in the Lord and not our work or labors. Give us a ready mind and heart to pursue your kingdom and righteousness all of our days. Encourage us with the comfort of your promise that you are our God, and we are your people, and you will bring us safely to our rest at the end of our days. We pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
