Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 16
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q5
Q.5. Are there more Gods than one?
A. There is but one only, the living and true God.
Prayer: Our God in heaven, you who are holy and glorious, we come to you today to adore you and praise you for who you are and what you have revealed about yourself. Your Word declares that there is only one God, and there is no other. Though we confess that we often fashion you in our image, at times, we know that your Word declares who you are, a God that is living and truthful. Your Word tells us that we are to hear from you only as you speak to us in your Word. We are thankful that you are the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. We praise you that as our God, your Word tells us that you are also our Savior. We are thankful that we can have access to you through your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
We confess our sin of idolatry. We are saddened at how often we place our hope and trust and affection on the things of this life. Please forgive us and renew our hearts with a greater understanding of who you are, as revealed in the Scriptures.
We ask that you would help us to live our lives before you today in a way that would please you, the God of heaven, who is the alone God of all creation. We pray this in Christs’ Name. Amen.
