Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 8
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q4
Q. 4. What is God?
A. God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth.
Prayer: Our great God in heaven: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we adore you this day because you are our God, and we are your people, the sheep of your pasture. You are the creator and sustainer of all things. You made the world — all that we see and can’t see — in the space of six days and all very good. You are the true Sovereign, and you rule and reign in your universe doing all things according to the counsel of your eternal decree and purpose. We confess to you that we often forget how glorious and majestic you are in all of your works. We often fail to remind ourselves that you are sovereign and good and that you are for us, helping us and sustaining us as we pilgrim to our heavenly rest. Therefore, we often fret and worry. We know that it is sin, and we confess it openly to you. Forgive us, Father, for that evil in our hearts and cleanse us from it. Help us by your Holy Spirit to trust you in all things.
As we consider who you are today, a God who is unchangeable, we are comforted by the fact that there is no shadow of turning in you. We praise you for your steadfast and faithful ways towards your people. We adore you for your promises that are always “Yes, and Amen” in the Lord Jesus Christ. We thank you that you are not fickle with your love, mercy, kindness, and grace. Therefore, we can trust you and all that you say to us, your people that you love.
We pray for those affected by providence — especially weather and illness. We ask that you would sustain them today and be faithful to them. Help them to look to you and trust you as the God who does not change. May they know your peace today in the face of trying circumstances of this fallen world. We also ask that you would use these painful providences to advance your Kingdom in this world. We pray that you would bring many in through these things and bless the opportunities your people have to minister to others. We pray these things in Christs’ Name, believing that you hear us. Amen.
