Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 7
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q4
Q. 4. What is God?
A. God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth.
Prayer: Our most glorious God in heaven: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we bow before your majesty to ascribe to your the glory that is due to you. You alone are God, and there is no other. You have revealed yourself in your Word. You have told us who you are and what you have done and are doing. You have revealed yourself – your attributes and holy character – and we thank you for communicating those truths to us through your Word and Spirit. You are a God who is infinite. You have no beginning or end of days. You are from everlasting to everlasting, the Alpha and Omega, the great I am. Your infinite nature extends to all of your attributes. You are a God who is infinite in love; therefore, we can trust you. You are not like your creatures. Your love is steadfast and free from change. You will not love us today and hate us tomorrow. You love your people with an infinite love rooted in the Lord Jesus Christ. You proved the depths of your love by sending your only begotten Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. We thank you, our God, for your infinite nature and eternal love.
Forgive us, Father, for our shortcomings and transgressions against your Law. You have told us what is required of us, and we find that we come to the end of each day with many reasons to beg your forgiveness. We long to walk in all of your ways and do all that you have told us with our thoughts, words, and actions—grant to us to forgiveness that you promise in your Word. Bless us. Make your face to shine upon us today.
We cry out to you for the sake of our loved ones — our family and friends. We ask that it would please you to open their eyes and ears to the truth of the Gospel. Warn the, O Lord, of their imminent doom and fierce wrath of a holy God. Do what you have done for us as a God who delights in the salvation of sinners. Help them, Father. These things we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the only mediator between God and men. Amen.
