Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 6
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q4
Q. 4. What is God?
A. God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth.
Prayer: Our God in heaven, you are infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, and we bless your Name today because you alone are worthy of our praise. There is nothing in all creation that is like you. While mere man attempts to recreate your image, they only show their ignorance and folly. Because you are a Spirit, it is impossible to fashion you in any earthly way rightly. We have learned from your Word how much you despise the efforts of man to fashion you after things above, or things on the earth, or things under the earth. Forgive us, O God, when we fall prey to that temptation. Your Word declares that there is no God like you. Therefore, we were made to worship you. Help us to do so with our lives. May we stand in awe of you as the one who is infinite, eternal, and unchangeable.
Grant to us a greater love for you, our God. Help us to come into your presence with singing and with joy in our heart because you alone have made us and we are yours. We thank you for your work of redeeming a people through your Son. In Christs’ Name. Amen.
