Prayer: Our God in heaven: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we confess to you that when we read the words of your servant, David, and how he proclaims his love for you, we do not always feel the same way. As creatures of dust, we struggle with that at times, though you have given us many reasons to do so. You gave us your Son, and you were pleased to crush him for our sake. You have given us your Spirit so that we would understand your Word and find comfort in our times of distress and discomfort. You have given us an abundance of promises; all of them are yes and amen in the Lord Jesus. You have told us of the New Heavens and the New Earth, which we await eagerly. You are our shield that defends us against the efforts of the Evil One to ruin us. You are our fortress that we can run to and find shelter when the cares of this world overwhelm us. You are our God, and we are your people, and we can call upon you who is worthy to be praised day and night. Why is it, O Lord, that we wrestle with loving you? What would prevent us from giving you our whole heart? We grieve that which hinders us, and we mourn the indwelling sin that prevents us from entering into unspeakable joy. Though we long to love you as you have told us, all we can offer you is a plea to give us what command and help us by your Spirit to love you as you deserve. Therefore, Father, please grant us an extra measure of your Spirit today. Please help us to express our love in words and actions. Please help us remember that if we say we love you, we will do all you tell us. Thank you for giving us your beloved Son, who does these things perfectly to satisfy your just demands. We stand in awe of your grace in rescuing poor, pitiful creatures from their misery. We pray these things in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
