Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 5
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q3
Q. 3. What do the Scriptures principally teach?
A. The Scriptures principally teach what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man.
Prayer: Our glorious God in heaven: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we bless your name today, thankful for the privilege to come to you to pray and to plead and to ask those things that we need each day. We know that you have invited us to come to you and to worship you in prayer. You are worthy of our worship because you are majestic and holy, a God of kindness and grace. We thank you for your grace and for not treating us as our sins deserve. We often profess with our mouths one thing, yet in our behavior, our lives contradict those things. Forgive us, Father, for our duplicity. Forgive us for hearts that are prone to wander fro your Word.
As your sheep, you have not left us alone. You shepherd us through your Word, teaching us all that you would have us know about you. You have been gracious to tell us who you are and what you have done to redeem your people. You have shed the light of your Word into our hearts so that we would rightly know what we are to believe about you. We are grateful for the clarity of the Scriptures and what it calls us to do as your people. You have told us what you require from all mankind, and especially what you require from those whom you rescued and saved from sin. Help us to walk in your ways by meditating deeply upon your Word. Grant to us your Holy Spirit so we can rightly understand the truths of the Scriptures and behold your glory and follow you as our Good Shepherd. As your sheep, we hear your voice in the Scriptures and desire to follow you. Grant to us what you command us, O Lord!
Today we ask that you would be with your church, and especially those men you have called to proclaim your Word to your people. Help them as they labor in the study—grant to them insight and understanding. Give them clarity of thought and mind so they may prepare a meal for your people. Grant them your Spirit and give them grace we ask in the name of Christ, our Lord. Amen.
