Praying through the Westminster Shorter Catechism
Prayer 4
Westminster Shorter Catechism Q2
Q. 2. What rule hath God given to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him?

A. The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.

Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, we bless your name today. You are the one true God, and there is no other. You are a God of lovingkindness and compassion. You are good and great, and the alone sovereign of heaven and earth. You have made all that we see and do not see. You have made us in your likeness, with your image stamped upon our heart. Therefore, we are to bless you and honor you and glorify you with our lives.

As we consider you Word given to men where you revealed your righteous laws and demands, we confess, Father, that we fall short of that glory you demand from us. We are sinners, and we sin. We do not love you, as you have commanded. We have not loved and revered your Word given to us. We fail to deeply consider it as that which provides us with life and hope. You have been pleased to tell us how we, as your creatures, may glorify you in all that we do. You have given us your moral law – summarized in the Ten Commandments — and as we read them and contemplate them, we see how much we need the Savior. Forgive us for failing you. Forgive us for not loving you as we should. Forgive us for not drinking deeply from your Word that tells us how to live righteous and holy lives before you.

Today we pray for our loved ones who stand under your righteous condemnation because the blood of the Passover Lamb does not cover them. We ask that you would be pleased to rescue them from Egypt, that place of sin and bondage that has blinded their eyes to the truth of the Gospel. Father, you delight in the salvation of sinners, and we ask that you would save those in our families from a tragic and Christless eternity.

Help us, today, to love, serve and glorify you in all that we do we pray in the name of the one who did all that we could never do, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Theology/Christianity:

The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus was “in every respect . . . tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus Christ, the God-man, was truly tempted in his humanity, though not in all the same ways as sinners are. Temptations came at him from without, while inside he remained “without sin.” Though Satan and a rebellious world assaulted him, temptation never found a home within him. He is, therefore, both impeccable in his moral purity and sympathetic to tempted sinners.
